Bow Ties on Dogs

Bow ties for dogs? Why not? Thing things I do to my pups in the name of crafty goodness. They are good sports about it, especially when there are treats involved. Honestly, I can ‘t get my two human boys to cooperate as well as my fur-boys.  Don’t they just look so dashing? No worries if you have fur-gals. These simple to make bows can be flip to the top of the collar for a pretty bow any girl will love. Are ready to make some??

  • Fabric *I used a fat quarter coordinating set purchased at Walmart
  • Ruler
  • Pinking sears and/or rotary cutter
  • Neutral thread and needle
  • Sewing machine (not shown)
  • Iron (not shown)

Cut and Fold

**When you work with new fabric, you should wash and dry them prior to sewing. This will preshrink it (especially if it’s cotton). Then, iron to get rid of wrinkles to make measuring and cutting easier.

For the bow ties I made, I cut the fabric 14 in X 8 in (for the bow) and another piece 4 in X 4 in for the middle part that will wrap around the bow. The finished size was 7 inches long (kinda big for my pups, but I made them for larger dogs that you will see in a later post).  You can use a rotary cutter or pinking shears. The pinking shears help keep the fabric from fraying.

Fold the 14 X 8 inch piece into thirds. Press the seams with  the iron.

Sew and Flip

Line up the ends of the folded 14 X 8 piece (seam side out)  and sew together using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.  Then flip the piece so the newly sewed seam is on the inside (all raw seams should be on the inside at this point).

Make the Bow

Thread your needle. Gently squish the middle of the fabric together. Insert the needle through on end of the center in pull it through the folded/squished fabric. You can make several passes until it feels secure.  Tie off the thread and cut.

Make the Center

To make the center piece that goes in the middle of the bow, you  will need to fold the 4X4 inch piece of fabric into thirds, press, then line up the ends and sew. Just like the bow, you’ll flip it so the seams are on the inside.  Slip the loop onto the bow.

Put it on Your Pup

To put the bow tie on your dog’s collar, simply slip the collar through the middle loop of the bow tie. If it seems a little loose, make the middle loop a bit smaller or pin to the collar with a safety pin.

My boys are so tolerant of my crafty antics. Be sure to give your pups plenty of treats for posing so pretty!
